Sie beginnt um das Jahr 975 mit dem Perser Ali ibn Hasan aus Schiraz (Begründer der Schiraz-Dynastie), der den Grundstein der Stadt legte. Seit Anfang des 14. Jhdts. herrschte in Kilwa die aus dem Jemen stammende Mahdali-dynastie, deren Erster al-Hasan bin Talut war. Der Höhepunkt war unter seinem Enkel Al-Hasan ibn Sulaiman Abu'l-Mawahib um ca 1330, wo auch viele wichtige Bauwerke gebaut wurden. Gegen Ende des 14. und Anfang des 15. Jhdts. ging es mit der Stadt stetig bergab, die große Moschee verwahrloste, und andere Moscheen wurden zu Wohnhäusern umgebaut. </ins></div></td></tr>
