Eva Stuart-Watt und der Kilimanjaro
Eva Stuard Watt. This young missionary lived with her mother and sister on Kilimanjaro from 1924 - 1927. She recounts many of the Wachagga stories, including their tale of humankind's fall from God's grace. Watt ascended the slope in September 1926. There's a great photograph of her kneeling next to the frozen leopard, first publicly reported by Dr. Donald latham, who dug it out of the snows, and later made famous in Hemmingway's Snow of kilimanjaro. Ms. Eva Stuart-Watt wrote of the leopard: "No one can tell what induced it to venture into a land so cold and desolate; but possibly the smell of
meat carried by some safari had led it to follow their trail." I give a possible inducement and reason for its burial under the snows.EVA STUART WATT was born in Australia in 1891. Her father was a successful businessman in the tea trade in Great Britain. He was an agnostic, but converted to Christ during D.L. Moody's tour in Great Britain from 1873-1875. Ten years later, her father and mother left the Isles to be missionaries in Africa, but because of health concerns they moved to Australia. It was on this respite that Eva Watt was born. At the age of ten she went to Ireland for the first time so she could get an education. In 1914, she returned to Africa to serve alongside her parents. In 1928, after fourteen hard years in the field in which she lost her father and brother to fever, she returned to Ireland
where she founded the Young Ireland for Christ mission in Dublin. She continued ministry in her home country until her death. During her lifetime she wrote many books about her missionary efforts both in Ireland and in Africa.Painter and writer, born in East Africa where her parents were missionaries. As a child she was raised in Dublin where she later attended the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art.
